Who is Ezo Gelin?
This real heroine of a widely known story was born in 1909 in Urus (now Dokuzyol) village of Oguzeli District (Gaziantep Province) and lived there until 1936.
Her story from Bagdat Isbilir, one of Ezo’s closest friends. She told to us that Ezo was a really beautiful and attractive young girl of light texture, red cheeks and blackhair Camel riders of caravans asked for water and Ezo served them. She was so attractive that she became widely known in the area. There were some coming and asking water just to see her face once. When she was 20, she got married to Sido Hanifi from her village in an "exchange" procedure (a practice of exchange whereby a brother and sister marry siblings from another family in orderto cancel out traditional bridegroom payments). Ezo got divorced after a year since her marriage was not going well.
Village women retell the story of Ezo Gelin Although divorce was not generally allowed in this type of marriage, her family did not stand against Ezo since they found her right in her decision. The story was this: Sido Hanifi was in love with someone else. In fact he had an arrangement with the brother of the girl she loved: Sido Hanifi would give his own sister to him. But the family on the other side resisted
and actually stopped the process. Sido, then offered his sister to the brother of Ezo and got married with her. But despite this marriage Sido was still in love with the other girl. He left his new wife Ezo alone in the house, went out and sang songs for his beloved. This was of course an unbearable situation for Ezo. How could he be still infatuated with someone else at the presence of beautiful Ezo?
